Dr. Katie Young, Senior Equine Nutritionist and Product Manager, has worked with Purina for more than 17 years, initially as a consultant, and more recently as a member of the Equine Technical Solutions Team. Her responsibilities include developing and maintaining horse feed formulas and standards, as well as ingredient and production standards, and providing technical support for the Purina customers, dealers, and sales. Prior to her association with Purina, Dr. Young worked at Farmland Industries, first as Equine Nutritionist and Horse Feed Program Manager, and later as a Business Consultant and Professional Development Trainer for Farmland’s local member cooperatives.
Dr. Young earned her bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University, and her doctorate in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University. Her research concentrated on mineral requirements of resting and exercising horses. During her stay in Texas, Dr. Young also served as a faculty member in the Equine Science Section of the Animal Science Department teaching courses in equitation, training, and horse management, was Supervisor and Coach of the TAMU Equestrian Teams, and a Board Member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.
Dr. Young has more than 40 years of experience in the horse industry. She started riding as a child in southwest Missouri, first as a barrel racer, and later moving into hunters and jumpers. After moving to Texas, Dr. Young continued participating in hunter/jumper shows, as well as eventing and dressage competitions, and played competitive polocrosse. Currently, she rides and competes in eventing and dressage. Dr. Young has worked as a trainer and riding instructor for more than 35 years, and continues do so in the Kansas City area.
